Diocese Museum

plac Katedralny 6, 33-100 Tarnów, Polska

In historical buildings of the parish school next to the cathedral the oldest diocese museum in Poland is located. It was founded in 1888 by rev. Józef Bąba and it found its location here in the 1950’s. The most important part of the collection are monuments of the craft art – Gothic sculptures and paintings from the area of Małopolska, which represent the so-called Cracow-Sącz school. The other part of the collection includes ecclesial fabrics (chasubles, coverings, etc.) from the Middle Ages up to the 19th century. Also the folk art division is interesting, where folk pictures painted on glass, coming from Europe but also different continents, deserve special attention. They were donated to the Diocese Museum in 1957 by a familiar in Poland and abroad collector, Hungarian by origin, a citizen of Tarnów, Norbert Lippóczy. The museum also presents examples of modern folk sculptures from the centre of this art in Paszyn near Nowy Sącz.
