St. Giles’ Church in Zakliczyn
Mickiewicza 28, Zakliczyn
St. Giles’ Church is a Roman-Catholic church in Zakliczyn. The history of the temple dates back to the Middle Ages when the village Opatkowice (now Zakliczyn) belonged to the vast possessions of the Benedictine Abbey in Tyniec. Benedictine monks founded a wooden church there in the 12th century. It was the first church there and it was located on a small hill on the Dunajec River bank. The contemporary church is located at Mickiewicz’s Street beside a late-Renaissance 16th/17th century chapel, modeled on the Sigismund’s royal chapel of the Wawel Cathedral.
