The Market Square

33-100 Tarnów

The oldest and the main square of Tarnów is the market. A rectangular market place was charted in 1330 and a pair of streets led out of each corner. Basically, it has not changed its shape till today. It is typical for towns founded under Magdeburg rights. However, during centuries the buildings standing in the market square changed. Nowadays the total number of them is 24, including the Town Hall in the centre. The market square was the place where the town life was going on, markets, fairs and rallies were held, court sentences were performed. The houses in the Market Square stand on cellars built in the 15 th and 16 th centuries, though some of them were erected much later. The most remarkable are houses: no. 4, which is the Sanguszkos’ and later the bishops of Tarnów’s manor; no. 5, which has bricked up ogival arcades – it is the oldest house in the Market Square; and combined houses no. 19, 20 and 21 with arcades and attics, which are examples of Renaissance tenement buildings. You can see them from the inside visiting the Museum of History of Tarnów. Nowadays, in the Market Square of Tarnów permanent trade is no longer held.
