Former church and monastery of the Order of Bernardine Fathers in Tarnów

21 Bernardyńska, 33-100 Tarnów

The Order of Friars Minor, popularly known as Bernardines, is closely related to the history of Tarnów. Standing next to the baroque church of the Bernardines, we can see at the end of Bernardyńska Street a large building with a classicist west facade. However, when we approach this building from the eastern side, we notice a three-sided church chancel with partially bricked up windows. This is the former Bernardine Church of Our Lady of the Snow. On the other side of the street there is a tall building with the date 1823 in its pediment. Behind it, on its southern side, there is a brick defensive wall several meters high with visible outlines of bricked arrowslits. A similar wall is also on the north side of the former church. Both the aforementioned buildings and sections of the walls are preserved parts of the first Bernardine monastery in Tarnów from the second half of the 15th century. Over the centuries, many saintly monks lived there, including probably St. Simon from Lipnica. From the history of the Bernardine convent, it is also worth mentioning the stay and death in 1765 of Elżbieta Drużbacka, a Polish Baroque poet.
