The Jewish cemetery in Tarnów

Szpitalna, 33-100 Tarnów

Jewish cemetery in Tarnów at Szpitalna Street is one of the oldest Jewish necropolises in Poland. The first mention of its existence comes from 1581. Over the centuries, its area has been successively enlarged and now it amounts to over hectares. During World War I, the bodies of soldiers killed during the fighting in the vicinity of Tarnów were buried in this area. During the German occupation, the cemetery was the site of mass executions. The Germans shot thousands of people here. It is estimated that about 3,000 bodies are buried in mass graves. In 1946, Dawid Beckert erected a monument on the cemetery, for the construction of which he used a broken column from the ruins of the New Synagogue in Tarnów.
