Florentine House, Żydowska St. 20

Żydowska 20, 33-100 Tarnów

Traditionally, one of the most picturesque corners of Tarnów is the place where Żydowska street joins Forteczna street. There is a house which for unknown reason is called Florentine House, the arcade of which leans on the opposite house. Its higher storey is a little forwarded on small stone corbels. The house was probably built in the 16 th century by combining two buildings added to the defensive wall. In the next century Jews, who were in masses setting down in this part of the town, became its owners.
In the beginning of the 19 th century the building was developed. After the liquidation of the town fortification the second tract was constructed, which was placed in the buried moat, and the defensive wall became the inter-tract wall. In years 1954-56 the house was renovated, among others, the side entrance was made. Since 1962 the building houses the Tarnów PTTK seat and on the ground floor there is a coffee shop.
