The 9th century square, serving as a market square, was marked out already at the stage of the city’s foundation. It was called Krupniczy Square, and later Mały Rynek. It has been called the present day since 1869, and the city commemorated the re-burial of King Casimir the Great at Wawel. During the occupation, on February 5, 1940, the German authorities took over the premises at 5 Kazimierza Wielkiego Square. The library located there was closed and the collection was moved to the cellars.
