Szeklers’ Gate
33-100 Koszyce Wielkie
Going along Krakowska street one can easily find a unique wooden construction in a form of richly carved gate without door. It is the Józef Bem and Sandor Petöfi’s Szeklers’ Gate. It is a gift from Hungarian Foundation Irott Szó and town Sepsiszentgyőrgy for Tarnów city. It was created in 2001 on the 170th anniversary of the battle of Ostrołęka – one of the November Uprising battles, in which Józef Bem took part. Through the gate you can reach Sandor Petöfi’s square. He was an outstanding Hungarian poet, leader of Hungarian Spring of Nations and general Józef Bem’s adjutant. His bust and wooden spearmen devoted to Hungarian people related to Tarnów can be found there. Similar gates – Hungarian gates – gifts, can be seen in Koszyce Wielkie and Stary Sącz. The name of Szekler people comes from the word “szegély” meaning a border. The Szeklers, living in today’s Romania, were called “board guardians”, because it is the role which this ethnic group played for years in the Kingdom of Hungary.
