Rynek 1, 33-100 Tarnów

The Town Hall is located in the middle of the Market. It is one of the most characteristic objects in the city and at the same time its symbol. Initially, it was the seat of the city council and the magistrate court. Since 1931 it has been the seat of a museum. The Town Hall is located on the Renaissance Route in Małopolska due to the compactness of the plan, simplicity, clarity and harmony of the structure typical for Renaissance architecture. The first mention about the Town Hall in Tarnów comes from 1448. Initially it was probably a wooden or wooden-stone building, which was destroyed during the town fire in 1494. In its place a stone one-floor construction with a slope roof was built. In the first quarter of the 16th century a floor was added and a square clock tower was erected. In the 1550’s the most important reconstruction of the building started. The Town Hall was extended by the western part and a staircase in the south. The cylindrical part of the tower was added. Moreover, on the top of the structure there is a high stone wall of the attic. The attic of the Town Hall in Tarnów was decorated with 28 recesses containing portraits of the “Masters of Tarnów” with captions. They have not been preserved till now. On the northern side of the Town Hall there is the “evildoers’ pit”.
