The cathedral of Tarnów is located on the highest spot of the Old Town Hill. Nowadays, from the outside, it looks like a Neo-Gothic construction with a 72 m tall tower. It received this shape during the recent reconstruction at the turn of the 20th century. However, an expert eye will notice older Medieval walls of the construction. The temple was built as the Nativity of Our Lady parish church soon after the town was founded. In 1400 it became a collegiate church. During the 15th century it was enlarged by lateral chapels. After the fires at the end of the 15th century it was reconstructed and a tower as well as a short sanctuary were added. In the 16th century hetman Jan Tarnowski founded a few extremely precious Renaissance tomb monuments for his family there. The tradition of constructing such monuments was also continued by next owners of Tarnów – the Ostrogskis. At present, the complex of these monuments is the most precious, the most worth seeing historical place of Tarnów. Two of them are one of the biggest tomb monuments in Europe. In 1786 the collegiate church became the cathedral of the bishop of Tarnów. For this reason it was reconstructed again.
Inside the temple there are Gothic-Renaissance tombs of the Tarnowski family and a Baroque tomb of the Ostrogskis, which rightfully pass for one of the most outstanding pieces of art in Poland made by such masters as: Bartolomeo Berrecci, Giovanni Maria Padovano and Johann Pfister.
The tomb monument of Barbara Tarnowska, maiden name Tęczyńska, made by Bartolomeo Berrecci is considered as the most beautiful sculpture of a woman in the Renaissance era. A multi-storey monument of Jan Tarnowski and his son Krzysztof is considered the most monumental. It is 13.8 metres tall and 5.6 metres wide. Rich equipment, which includes, among others, Gothic canon stalls with abundantly curved backrests standing under the choir, altars, sculptures, epitaphs, pictures and stained-glass windows place the Tarnów cathedral among the most beautiful temples in Poland.
