General Józef Bem mausoleum

General Józef Bem’s (born in 1794 in Tarnów, died in 1850, and Allepo – now Syria) mausoleum in the middle of the pond in Strzelecki Park is the most important place in Tarnów, dedicated to the hero of Poland and Hungary born here. His sarcophagus rests on six Corinthian columns. On its walls there are inscriptions in Polish, Turkish and Hungarian. The base of the monument is surrounded by a chain with spheres made of melted cannons. The general’s Bem remains were exhumed in Aleppo, Syria in 20 June 1929. Before they were brought to Tarnów, they were displayed in a coffin for public view in Budapest and at Wawel in Kraków. Funeral ceremonies in Tarnów took place on June 30, 1929. The author of the mausoleum is Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz, polish architect.
