Sanctuary of Our Lady of Victory

Pl. Kościelny 1, 33-240 Odporyszów

At a distance of 1 kilometer from the town of Żabno, there is the village of odporyszów, above which rises a high bell tower of the church, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Victory. There is a miraculous painting of the Mother of God in the main altar. The faithful often come to him from distant places. The painting was probably created in the second half of the 16th century. The local tradition connects it with the apparitions of Mary to Polish troops during the wars with the Swedes. The construction of the baroque church was completed in 1702. The church has a single nave with a short presbytery closed with a straight wall. Wyporyszów is also famous for the figure of Jan Wnęk, a genius self-taught sculptor, whose pastor, Fr. Stanisław Morgenstern commissioned over 200 sculptures to illustrate the events of the life of Jesus and the Holy Mother, which were to be placed in 52 chapels. Flying was Jan Wnek’s second passion. He made his first flight from the belfry tower on wings he constructed in 1866. He died during one of them three years later.
