Town walls
Basztowa, 33-100 Tarnów
The old town in Tarnów is surrounded by remains of stone fortifications best visible from the side of Walowa and Bernardyńska streets. They were probably created in the 14th century (the first mention comes from 1448) and later they were developed. Two gates placed in bastions led into the town. On the western side it was the gate of Cracow and on the eastern one of Pilsen. The remains of the latter can be seen in Brama Pilzneńska street. Later on the Smaller gate was built on the southern side in Wielkie Schody street. The stone fortified circle in a town belonging to a magnate was something exceptional in the Polish Kingdom. In the first half of the 16th century, at the time of hetman Jan Tarnowski, the fortification was modernised and, among others, the second line of walls and semi-bastions were added. On of them can be seen in Wałowa street. In the 18th century the town walls of Tarnow were already obsolete and in bad condition. Demolition works started at the end of XVIII century.
