The church in Zawada near Tarnów stands on the top of St. Martin’s Mountain. It got its name after the patron saint of the church. It was probably erected at the end of the 14th century or in the beginning of the 15th. However, the parish itself is much older. The wooden Gothic church is a log construction, with one nave and a narrower chancel. The roof of the temple is covered with shingle. The nave is surrounded with characteristic arcades called “soboty”, which were probably added in the 18th or 19th century. The interior, covered with a flat ceiling, has Baroque decorations. In the main altar of the 1st half of the 17th century there is a picture with the image of the church patron and sculptures of St. Wojciech and St. Stanislaus. An exceptional decoration of the temple is located on the sill of the choir and consists of four late Gothic bas-relief boards, polychromic scenes connected with Jesus’ resurrection. Most probably they come from the late Gothic triptych from the beginning of the 16th century, which was created in one of Cracow or Sącz workshops under the influence of Wit Stwosz’s works. A curiosity is a wooden chain suspended under the rainbow beam. According to the local tradition it was curved in one piece of lime tree ages ago by some blind shepherd.
