Tramway Cafe (history of the tramway line)
plac Sobieskiego, 33-100 Tarnów
Tarnów was (besides Lviv and Cracow) one of three cities in Galicia in which an electric tramway started operating in 1911. The carriages were decorated with green, flowers and ribbons. They were red with blue-golden crest. They were caressingly called “ladybirds”. They were modelled on the tramways of Lviv, which were the same colour. The line was opened on 25th September 1911. The length of the tramway line in Tarnów was 2,580 m. It ran from Burtnicza street, along Lwowska, Wałowa and Krakowska to the railway station. 6 carriages were in permanent service, every 6 minutes from 6 am to 10 pm. In 1927 the tramway system in Tarnów transported about 1.22 million passengers, in 1938 – 0.7 million. The tramway in Tarnów was liquidated by occupational German authorities in 1942. The reason was that the traction was an obstacle for military movements to the east and it had to be dismantled. It stopped operating on 21st July 1942. Eight carriages were handed over to occupied Lviv.
